DESCRIPTION
Instituto Politécnico de Leiria is a public higher education institution founded in 1980 and supports its activities in four main interconnected areas, namely, education, research, innovative services to society (added value and sharing knowledge) and internationalization. It is committed to high standards of education and research and concerned about producing knowledge of high cultural, economic and social value, driven by five core values: inclusion, cooperation, responsibility, innovation, and critical and entrepreneurial thinking.
Instituto Politécnico de Leiria has five schools, located in the cities of Leiria (the School of Education and Social Sciences; the School of Technology and Management; and the School of Health Sciences), Caldas da Rainha (School of Arts and Design) and Peniche (School of Tourism and Maritime Technology), accommodating more than 14 000 students and more than 1600 staff.
It is one of the top HEI in Portugal, particularly associated to the regional transformation in a collaborative process that engages the main regional stakeholders in an innovative regional ecosystem. In the last 10 years, several important goals were achieved:
- Global Campus and International Degrees: - Coordinating Institution of the RUN-EU European University; - Unique and international-linked degrees; - A Distance Learning Unit (UED); - A multicultural strategy and environment that lead to the increasing of international students; - A referenced centre “CRID – Resource Centre for Digital Inclusion”; - The project “100% IN – Full integration of students with special needs”; and - The Erasmus programs experience.
- Research and Innovation Regional Ecosystem: - Fifteen research centres supported by the national science and technology foundation, including 3 excellent (Industry and Direct Digital Manufacturing; Energy, Transports and Aeronautics; Marine and Environment Science); - A unique start-up ecosystem composed by four incubators; - A regional ecosystem that promote societal engagement, including two scientific infrastructures located at the “heart” of two industrial parks, as well the occurrence of more than 2500 internships/year with SME’s and other regional stakeholders; - The Portuguese HEI that lead in the last 10 years the co-creation projects with SME supported by the Portuguese National Innovation Agency (more than 120 approved projects/14M€/+200 SME); - The R&D international experience, which includes FP7 and H2020 projects, R&D international projects supported by the valorisation and internationalisation national program, and the co-cooperation in the innovative international strategies in third countries HEI.
These high-quality structures and activities, including in the international environment and innovative pedagogical models empower student body and the access, participation and completion of under-represented and disadvantaged groups.

DRA. RITA CADIMA
Rita Cadima holds a PhD degree in Multimedia Engineering and her main research areas include Computer-Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW), Computer-Supported Collaborative Learning (CSCL), Innovation and Knowledge Sharing in Learning Organizations and Quality Assessment in E-learning. She is Professor at Education and Social Science School (ESECS) since 2000 and she was Coordinator of the master in Pedagogical Use of ICT (2010-2014). She was Vice-President of Polytechnic of Leiria (2014-2022) and Director of the Distance Learning Unit (2013-2018).
DRA. ANTÓNIA BARRETO
Professor on the areas of Methodology, Research, School management and administration, teaching resources and materials, Evaluation. She is a researcher at the Center for International Studies of ISCTE and at the Center for Education and Innovation (CI&DEI). She has been participating in several national and international projects for the formal and no formal education and in the area of “Education for Development”, mainly linked to Non-Governmental Organizations in African Countries of Portuguese Official Language.
She currently coordinates the Master Education Sciences: education and communitarian development and special needs education. She had been working with international agencies in assessing African education systems and implementing educational reforms.
DR. FILIPE SANTOS
PhD in informatics. Adjunt Professor at the Leiria Polytechnic Institute on the areas of Educational Technology, Digital Literacy and Media Accessibility. He is a researcher at the Center for Studies in Education and Innovation (CI & DEI). He has been participating in several national and international projects for the design and implementation of “Digital Learning environments in formal and non-formal contexts” and in the area of “Technologies for Development”, mainly linked to Non-Governmental Organizations in African Countries of Portuguese Official Language. He currently coordinates the Master in Pedagogical Use of ICT at the Polytechnic of Leiria.
DRA. ISABEL PEREIRA
Isabel Pereira is Professor at Education and Social Science School (ESECS) since 1988. Pro-president for Pedagogical Innovation (2018-2022) and Director for the Distance Learning Unit (2018-2022). She holds a PhD in Information Science and Technologies and is an integrated member of the Center for Studies in Education and Innovation (CI&DEI).
She coordinated several courses: Teachers professionalization in service (1995-1998); bachelor in Basic Education (2005-2007 and 2010-2013), master in Pedagogical Use of ICT (2014-2018). She was President of the Pedagogical Council (2015-2019) and a member of several management bodies.
DRA. SANDRINE MILHANO
Holds a PhD in Education and a Master in Arts of Music Education. She is a professor at the School of Education and Social Sciences, since 1999. She held several coordinating roles at the Polytechnic of Leiria and was dean of the School of Education and Social Sciences.
She is currently a member of the scientific and pedagogic commissions of the MA in Education and Pedagogical Innovation, Artistic Intervention and Animation, Pre-school Education, and Pre-school Education and Primary School Teaching. She is a principal researcher at the Centre for Studies in Education and Innovation (CI&DEI) and a collaborator at -Interdisciplinary Centre for Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA).
