DESCRIPTION

Universidade Federal da Bahia (UFBA) was created in 1950 by the agglutination of several traditional higher education institutions (HEI) in Bahia. Among them was the oldest HEI in Brazil, the Medical School created by King Dom John VI in 1808, when the Portuguese court was transferred to Brazil. Today, UFBA is the largest higher education institution in Bahia and continues to play a vital role in training a wide range of professionals, teachers/professors, and researchers.

UFBA is the state's foremost center of scientific, cultural, and artistic production and currently has around 45 thousand students in 101 and 143 undergraduate and graduate courses, respectively.

In the last decades, UFBA has achieved national and international recognition in contextual science teaching and in the field of history, philosophy, and science teaching. This has been due to the creation of the interdisciplinary Graduate Program in Teaching, Philosophy, and History of Science (PPGEFHC) in 2000.

PPGEFHC aims to carry out investigations on approaches to science teaching informed by the history and philosophy of science, and historical and philosophical studies that bring contributions to science education, while training researchers in all three areas of the history of science, philosophy of science, and science education research. The program has formed around 270 masters and 200 doctors until the present, most of whom have been active in teaching and research in universities and schools throughout Brazil.

In the last decade, UFBA has invested systematically in internationalization by offering language courses for students, faculty, and staff, promoting the creation of international agreements with foreign universities, and increasingly supporting international publications by its faculty.
